Green Tips

Spare The Air in Winter Too!
Be aware of Spare-The-Air days when using BBQs, fireplaces and backyard firepits. Wood burning releases fine particles and chemicals into the air in and around your home, contributing to local air pollution levels and poor indoor air quality. Local government websites have more information, as well as “no burn” days listed by county.

Faves + Finds
Can you find the fire extinguisher in this photo?
Safety is so green…and household fires are nothing to laugh at. We love the new, stylish, affordable, and easy to use fire extinguisher from HomeHero. Their idea is that if a fire extinguisher is quick to find and simple to use, homeowners will be safer. They made theirs small, simple, and good looking – just how we like our life saving devices.

Let the Green Convene!

March 15th & 16th, Davis is hosting its first home show - with a green emphasis. MAK will be joining local vendors and tradesfolk, as well as hosting a few home-owner seminars on green building. MAK will be sharing a booth with our favorite green architect, Julie Haney. Julie and MAK teamed up with Bill Dakin of Davis Energy Group to help bring Build It Green and the City of Davis together to adopt the City’s current green-building guidelines program.

MAK - Not just for Davis anymore!

The ripples just keep spreading…MAK is excited to announce the completion of our first whole house remodel in the Sacramento area. Our talented group of staff and subs unearthed the hidden beauty of this Land Park gem with just the right mixture of curb appeal and improved functionality.

Check out the dramatic before and after photos of this project and several others we recently completed on our website.

GREEN BAG: Green Granite?

In February, MAK will be hosting a Green Bag Lunch with Susan Velasquez of Graniti Fiandre to discuss their environmentally friendly stone tiles. The tiles, which are made from ores and pigments instead of slabs, reduce mining impacts and take up less volume and weight when being shipped. The tiles are stronger than granite or marble, and look fantastic. Susan will teach us about the environmental impacts of granite quarrying and Graniti Fiandre’s alternative methods, as well as show us the beautiful options of tiles she has available.

To better understand the sheer scale of granite quarrying practice, check out the amazing photographs by Edward Burtynsky.

GET WITH THE PROGRAM!

The City of Davis has begun implementing a green building guidelines practice. In October of 2007, the building department began requiring a green points checklist be included with every permit application. MAK and other building professionals in town have been attending seminars with the City to discuss the program and how it will be enforced over the coming years. While the program is voluntary for the near future, the City will eventually begin requiring that projects show specific green elements they have incorporated from the checklist in order to receive their building permits.

The checklist was assembled by Build It Green and is already in use by many cities and counties in the Bay Area. Since MAK staffers have been getting certified with Build It Green since 2005, we feel especially prepared and excited to help our community integrate these guidelines.
