 New Features
Now in each issue of Show+Tell, you can enjoy Green Tips and Faves+Finds for easy green living ideas
and our favorite products.
Also, with Show+Tell's impressive publication history, we figured we better build a library - a paper free,
virtual library that is. Check out archive Show+Tell issues at makdesignbuild.com. Sure, we just have
one newsletter behind us now - but we have so much more to tell you, so keep checking back!

 Green Tips
It might be the dog days of summer, but it's worth thinking about your fireplace. Make sure the flue to your chimney is closed, or else all of your air conditioning
will be going the way of Mary Poppins - up, up, and away!

 Faves + Finds
We love Soji Solar Lanterns for brightening up those evening breezes this summer. The light is provide
by tiny LED bulbs which are powered by their own rechargeable battery and solar panel! These striking
lanterns compliment any outdoor space, cost nothing to run, and you can relax knowing you won't have
a tea light fire in your back yard! The 10" diameter lanterns come in 5 colors and at only $16 each are
as easy on your pocketbook as they are on the environment.

MAK is a Certified Sustainable Business!
While MAK has been certified as a green builder, we are now certified as a green business!
Certification is provided by the Sacramento Sustainable Business Program, which "promotes businesses that take voluntary actions to prevent pollution and conserve resources." While we
were already practicing some of the requirements, we got some good ideas too. Check out
the other certified green businesses in the Sacramento area - and to support them if you can!

 Green Bag Lunch
On June 19, MAK hosted its second "Green
Bag Lunch." JMJ Natural
Lighting in Sacramento talked to us about Solartubes, whole house
fans, and solar attic fans. We had a great turnout, including architects,
designers, city building department staff, and a few clients who we
knew were interested in whole house fans.
We got to handle the Solartube accessories
(including fan kits for bathrooms and an
amber filter to make the light a warmer
color) and have a good talk about the
impacts of attic heat on our energy bills. We
have worked with JMJ for several years now
and all our clients love their Solartubes.
Thanks to our green bag discussion, we are
sold on solar fans for attics and garages too.
What a great, inexpensive way to shield our homes
from these 100+ degree days - for little or no operating cost!

 Toto Dual Flush Review
MAK Staffer Juliana Tadano just added a Toto Dual Flush
Aquia toilet to her home, and she is raving! She says: "We
love it, hands down! This was a big splurge for our 'new
homeowners' budget, but since my husband and I
both have a background in water resources, it was
important to us to update our 1979 water hog
toilet - it was using 5 gallons per flush.
We put the Toto Aquia in our half bath, which gets
a lot of 'light duty' use. At 0.9 gallons per flush (or
1.6 gallons for 'heavy duty' flushes), we are saving
4 gallons a flush over our old toilet. The Toto works
great, our son gets a kick out of the dual flush choice,
and it looks FANTASTIC. In fact, the toilet is spurring a
whole bathroom update - when has a toilet done that before?
I have read a lot of HET (high-efficiency toilet) reviews, charts,
and test results for MAK, and the Toto comes out on top
everytime, We can now add our personal experience and
enthusiam to my HET knowledge database!"

 Artist + Tree = Artistree!
Ellen and Ken helped out this spring with the first ever TREE Davis "Artistree" Art and Silent auction event. Ellen worked with the rest of the TREE Davis event committee to do all of the many things - from soliciting artwork, planning and cleaning up (after stepping out of her party shoes) - that made "Artistree" such a fun filled success! And we could not have done it without Ken - who brought his power tools and keen eye for composition, spending all day installing over 40 works of art to be auctioned. He got the show up and looking great just in time for arriving guests.
In the end "Artistree" brought in over $5,000 to help< TREE Davis fulfill its mission to enhance and expand our urban forest.
