Case Study:
Luxe Kitchen
For the original owners of this 1999 tract house, it was time for a change. The noisy, dusty, awkward, and cluttered kitchen they had learned to live with suffered from poor lighting, no sound insulation, and an ill conceived layout. The kitchen needed to be transformed.

The clients were ready for, in their own words, a "luxe and spacious" kitchen suitable for quiet breakfasts or large holiday meals. To achieve the hushed and clean-lined formality they envisioned, both visual and auditory clutter would need to be cleaned up. A "decorative" partition wall and dust-gathering upper cabinets would be eliminated, sound insulation would be added to the walls and the windows would be upgraded. The foot print would expand to make room for a more efficient layout, resulting in a new office nook, increased storage, prep space, improved circulation, and better access to the deck.

WHERE DO I PUT MY CAKE STANDS?
The clients were sure of two things: there were no upper cabinets allowed, and they needed more storage. To achieve these conflicting goals magic-corner cabinetry, tall pull-out pantries, and a storage laden island were installed. The clients ultimately did concede to upper cabinets on the range wall. Once the upper cabinets and crown were installed the clients decided still more storage was required. Shelves were added to the office nook, and taking advantage of the high sloped ceilings over the range a second tier of uppers was designed to fit in the space between the upper cabinets and the ceiling. Custom angled dust valances scribed to the ceiling were created and added to the area above the range, at the pantry pull outs and at the nook to keep the visual lines clean and formal.

STRONG SILENT TYPE
One of the most outstanding "luxe" features can neither be seen nor heard: the use of spray foam insulation on both the interior and exterior walls. The sense one gets upon entering the kitchen is no longer that of a 1999 tract house. The dusty, dim and constricted layout has given way to a well lit, open space, where all of the necessary items are neatly stored. The finished kitchen is orderly and serene. The resulting quiet is like the hush after a new snowfall.
