Project description
This home sits on the edge of Stonegate Lake with fabulous views of the surrounding landscape. Despite the impressive site, the kitchen was dark and much of the view was blocked by upper cabinets that were hung at eye level. The focal point of the family room was a massive stone veneer fireplace that apparently looked cool when it was originally built decades ago. For this project, MAK’s goal was to create a simple and inspirational space where our client could read his books, relax with his friendly pup, Bosley, and entertain friends and family.

The client
John Knight is a long-time local educator who loves Shakespeare, historical fiction, mysteries, and novels by Western authors. He has the above quote displayed prominently on the wall in his living room along side a library-sized collection of books. Looking ahead to his upcoming retirement, John wanted to update and transform the space where he spends the majority of his free time – something he was soon going to have a lot more of! Already accustomed to an unstructured lifestyle, Bosley is an outgoing 6 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a nose for details and a penchant for table scraps.

The design challenge
To open up the views of the lake from the kitchen and create a very personal space with unique elements our client would love.

MAK's solution
The design for John’s space began with the development of a large curved peninsula to provide plenty of counter space and vantage points for enjoying the sparkling lake outside. MAK worked with John to select material finishes and a color palette of primarily neutral tones with occasional bursts of color. For the backsplash, John chose a colorful custom glass tile blend from Oceanside Glasstile that is made with up to 86% recycled glass content through a handcrafted process. The warm tile colors pop between the Suede Corian countertops crafted by Spectrum Solid Surfacing and the natural beech cabinetry made by Frank Schlosser and his team at California Contemporary.
MAK also replaced the Mike Brady inspired lava rock fireplace with one that anchors the space without threatening to erupt every seven years. The new fireplace include an energy efficient gas insert enclosed in an olive green cast concrete. MAK created the mantel from a piece of cedar given to us by a local artist who had dried and recently milled a fallen tree from her South Davis property.

Feats of magic
According to John, “My favorite parts of the remodel are the fireplace and being able to work in the kitchen and look out to the lake. Bosley’s favorite part is when I work in the kitchen, gaze out at the lake, and drop food on the floor.” See Bosley, we had your needs in mind from the beginning!
